Project Overview

IAE XR was created as part of an experiment addressing the impact of VR experiences on student outcomes in aerospace education.

The Mars Rover simulation allowed students to learn the different parts and system of the “Curiosity” Rover, pilot the rover on the Mars Surface, and utilize the laser drill to survey martian rocks.

In the simulation, the Martian surface was created from HiRISE Data taken from the NASA website, and the rover was created from 3D files also available in the NASA website.

The simulation was used to teach aerospace engineering concepts to undergrad students during the January 2024 and 2025 curriculum at MIT AeroAstro.
